The January event has been one of Northern Michigan’s staple running events since the late 1980’s. Held primarily in the Huron Hills area of Traverse City, the event is an annual favorite of the area’s year-round running community. Current members (2022) of the Traverse City Track Club can participate in the event FREE of charge.
The Traverse City Track Club announced Monday its annual in-person Frozen Foot Five Mile Run scheduled for January 22, 2022, will be changed to a “Rolling Start” any time from 9-10 a.m., to help avoid large crowd gatherings during the local surge of positive Covid-19 test results.
Putting on a road race is not just a matter of putting out a few orange cones. In reality, there’s so much that goes into presenting a community-running event. Getting to race day for Frozen Foot has proven unpredictable. Part of putting on a quality race is being proactive for all possible circumstances.
Whether indoor space can be rented and/or how many people can be indoors at one time is a big question mark at this time. Frozen Foot is an important, albeit expensive benefit for TCTC members, plus it is subject to group gathering guidelines as we have referenced in our event waiver.
So, with race day less than three (3) weeks away, we are moving to a completely outside Rolling Start. Here’s how it works:
Date: January 22, 2022
Start Time: To avoid large indoor groups, the start line will open outside at 9:00 for chip timing with your official bib. You can start any time between 9 and 10:00 a.m. The in-person Five Mile runs the advertised course through the Traverse City Huron Hills neighborhoods. Emphasis on “Hills” between miles 1 and 2.
Location: Eastern Elementary School, 1600 Eastern Avenue, Traverse City, 49686. Abundant parking onsite and in nearby school lots.
Packet Pick-up: Will be the morning of the event from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. at the event site at the front entrance at Eastern Elementary School, 1600 Eastern Avenue, Traverse City, 49686
End Time: Must start by 10:00 to receive an official time. The event is chip timed by Classic Race Management.
Course: The course will be marked with a start/finish line (same), course turn arrows, and mile markers; map available here. Use safe running guidelines as if you were on your usual run; do not run in the middle of the road and be defensive of autos driving on the course.
Results: As usual, results will be posted on the event website. Please allow until the late afternoon of January 22 for results to become official.
Post Event Social Share: Please post your finish line selfie photos with event swag. If you have an official photographer, share your action shots and post to the TCTC Frozen Foot Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/TCTCFrozenFootRace
Awards: In lieu of an Awards Ceremony, all finishers will be recognized in the official online results, and will receive the official swag. Finisher bib numbers will be placed into a random drawing for prizes from our local Fleet Feet Specialty Running Store. Winners can claim their prizes @11:00 outside near the finish line on the event day.
Age Categories: 5 year age categories male and female: 18 & under, 19-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-50, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75+.
Grand Prix Circuit: Age category finish places will be eligible in the TCTC 2022 Grand Prix Circuit for those who submit results and are a current 2022 TCTC members. Please make sure to wait until the results are finalized in the afternoon before submitting your points.
